Summary

This report describes and analyses temporal changes in fatalities per population between 1970 and 1990 in Australia. Annual time trends in fatality rates are examined by road user type (all fatalities, drivers, passengers, pedestrians, motor cyclists and bicyclists), State/Territory, gender, age, time of week and month. Report CR 115 comprises a summary of this report and of CR 114, which compares the trends in Australia and other countries.

Summary

A review of the international literature was undertaken to examine the relationshipbetween a vehicle's mass or size and its influence on occupant protection. A number of specific objectives were addressed on this relationship and its consequence for vehicle downsizing in Australia. There was considerableevidence that occupants in larger cars that crash have superior protection tothose in smaller cars. However, the precise relationship between size, mass and safety was complex and not totally clear from this review.

Summary

This study investigated the long term effects of Random Breath Testing (RBT) on NSW driver's attitudes, knowledge, and self-reported behaviour towards drink-driving. It was conducted to examine the possible mechanisms, which underlie the effectiveness of RBT, with a view to understanding its effects and ensuring that its success continues.

Summary

In March 1989, the fourth in a series of national surveys on community attitudes to road safety was conducted. This report contains results from Wave 4 and, where possible, comparative results since 1986. Issues covered in the survey include causes of road crashes, perceptions of police enforcement of road rules, attitudes to drink driving and random breath testing, driving behaviour, seat belt use and views held regarding various road user groups.

Summary

The majority of the report comprises a literature review of past research in to the nature of perception, interpretation and skilled response in young drivers. Consideration of the research suggests that the development of mature driving can be illuminated by considering research into the fundamental nature of expertise, or expert performance, in other activities. The report concludes by raising a number of questions about driving skill acquisition considered within the context of the development of expertise.

Summary

This booklet is a summary companion volume of a much larger and more detailed set of Guidelines produced for the South Australian Department of Transport, the Federal Office of Road Safety, the Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW and the Road Traffic Authority of Victoria. In essence, it presents an overview. It is designed as a practical, stand-alone work which can be read by anybody likely to be involved in any decision relating to a mass media campaign. Hopefully the reader will gain useful insights and helpful hints.

BACs were obtained from drivers tested between 10pm and 3am in roadside surveys conducted in Adelaide between 1981 and 1987; drivers admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital between September 1985 & July 1987; and drivers killed on South Australian roads from 1981 to 1987 inclusive. The proportion of women in the night-time driving population increased significantly from 1981 to 1987, as did the proportion of women with BACs at or above 0.08.
