In this study measurements of a range of indicators of fatigue were collected on long distance truck drivers undertaking a 10-12 hour journey under different operational conditions. Measurements of cognitive performance, physiological state, vehicle control and subjective perceptions of fatigue were taken for a sample of 27 drivers on trips corresponding to staged driving, single driving and driving to a flexible schedule.

Research into the types, severity and causes of crashes involving heavy vehiclesin urban Australia was carried out and countermeasures were recommended to reduce the incidence and severity of such crashes. The project included literature review, mass data analysis, detailed post-crash analysis of fatal crashes, analysis of accident black spots and in-depth investigation. The study found significant deficiencies in driver, rider and pedestrian behaviour which directly relate to thecausation of severe crashes.

This report represents a general set of tabulations for 1992 from the Serious Injury Database compiled by the Federal Office of Road Safety (FORS). More specific review of the 1992 police serious crash data will be provided within FORS’ annual statistical series Road Crashes Resulting in Hospitalisalion, together with analysis of hospital data for that year about road crash admissions.

This document reports the findings from a national survey of 1,244 people aged 15 years and over, conducted in May/June 1995. The survey is the eighth in a series of similar national studies conducted since October 1986 for the ATSB Road Safety, designed to monitor key community attitudes toward road safety issues.

This report examines data relating to all car crashes occurring in Australia in 1990 where at least one occupant fatality resulted from an impact to the side of the vehicle. In total 34% of all cars with occupant fatalities sustained a side impact, with equal numbers of such impacts occurring to the driver and passenger sides. While side impacts were found to be more likely to occur in urban areas and involve a collision between vehicles at an intersection, this situation is far from typical.
