Where is the Investigation up to?

  • The Jandakot Airport investigation will include a Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI), Sampling Analysis and Quality Plans (SAQP), Detailed Site Investigation (DSI) and Mass Flux Study.
  • The investigation's focus will be sampling and analysis on airport land to determine the nature and extent of PFAS in soil and groundwater, as well as potential migration pathways between the airport and adjacent residential land.
  • The PSI report, Mass Flux SAQP and DSI SAQP have been prepared by ERM and are under review by the department and the the contaminated land auditor.

Next steps

  • Fieldworks are expected to commence at the airport site in December 2024 and will take several months to complete.
  • Fieldworks will involve activities both on and off airport, as required by the investigation, and off-site works are expected to commence in February 2025.
  • ERM will engage with airport tenants and off-site residents impacted by the investigation works ahead of any scheduled activities.
  • Following fieldworks, a Mass Flux Study Report and Detailed Site Investigation Report will summarise investigation outcomes and identify and recommend next steps.
  • A Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment may be conducted if investigations identify it is required.
  • Investigations will inform the development of a PFAS Management Plan for Jandakot Airport that will document the approach to managing risks associated with PFAS contamination at the airport.
