Jandakot Airport

Site investigation

  • Environmental Resources Management Australia Pty Ltd (ERM) is the contaminated land specialist leading the Program investigation at Jandakot Airport.
  • The Program investigation at Jandakot Airport commenced in March 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in the third quarter of 2026.
  • The investigation will address potential sources of PFAS at the airport, as well as potential migration pathways to receptors both on and off airport.
  • An accredited contaminated land auditor from JBS&G Australia Pty Ltd has been engaged by the department to independently audit the investigation to ensure compliance with relevant regulations, national guidance and best practice.
  • To support the review of key investigation reports and plans, an Investigation Consultation Forum (ICF) has been formed. The ICF members include the department, the contaminated land specialist, the independent contaminated land auditor, the Airport and relevant state agencies.
  • Airport participation in the Program is voluntary. Jandakot Airport signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the department to join the Program on 25 July 2023.

Where is the Investigation up to?

  • The Jandakot Airport investigation includes a Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI), Sampling Analysis and Quality Plans (SAQP), Detailed Site Investigation (DSI), Mass Flux Study, Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment (HHERA) and PFAS Management Plan.
  • The PSI report, Mass Flux SAQP and DSI SAQP have been finalised following review by the ICF members. The HHERA Methodology and SAQP have been reviewed by the ICF members and are in the process of being finalised.
  • All on and off airport fieldworks are now complete. ERM visited around 180 residential properties in the vicinity of the airport and, where the resident consented, undertook sampling (informed by a Water Use Survey). Results letters have been provided to residents who had sampling conducted at their property.

Next steps

  • ERM are working on the Mass Flux Study report and DSI report, which will summarise investigation outcomes and identify and recommend next steps.
  • A HHERA is also underway to assess potential risks to human health and the environment associated with PFAS exposure and to inform mitigation strategies that may be required in the investigation area. The results of the HHERA will be shared with relevant WA authorities, including WA Department of Health.
  • Once the Mass Flux Study report, DSI report and HHERA are completed, they will be shared with the ICF members for review. The department will contact residents again once the HHERA is complete to inform them of the outcome and of any required advice or action.
  • The final stage of the investigation is the development of a PFAS Management Plan for Jandakot Airport, which will set out appropriate management actions to address any identified risks. The PFAS Management Plan for Jandakot Airport is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026.
