First Nations Community Wi-Fi Program—Project Noticeboard

Take a look at the First Nations Community Wi-Fi program Project Noticeboard (the Noticeboard) to find out if there are potential eligible community connectivity projects you may wish to develop into a project application for the First Nations Community Wi-Fi Program.

The opportunity to register a proposal to the Noticeboard closed 21 March 2025, to allow sufficient time for eligible applicants to engage appropriately with state and territory governments, and communities, on the development of proposals.

Published name: Walhallow Local Aboriginal Land Council (WLALC)

State or Territory: NSW

Community Location: Walhallow (also known as Caroona Mission)

Description of community needs:

Walhallow (Caroona Mission) is a regional Aboriginal community facing significant digital disadvantage, deepening existing barriers to education, healthcare, and employment. Limited connectivity restricts access to vital services, exacerbating social and economic inequities. A free, community-wide Wi-Fi solution will bridge this gap, supporting telehealth, learning, and cultural preservation. This submission is supported by Walhallow Local Aboriginal Land Council, Walhallow Aboriginal Corporation, Walhallow Murri Enterprise Aboriginal Corporation, and Walhallow Primary School.

Published name: Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council

State or Territory: QLD

Community Location: Mapoon

Description of community needs:

Mapoon is a very remote Indigenous community with a population of approximately 470 people, located on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula. Computer ownership is low but most residents and visitors to Mapoon have mobile phones. Free wifi is limited to the library and Wild Cape Cafe.

Implementing community Wi-Fi through the community would significantly benefit residents and visitors to Mapoon.

All digital improvement proposals should be designed following local First Nations engagement, in keeping with the community’s right to self-determination, co-design and respect for cultural rights.

Published name: Umoona Community Council

State or Territory: SA

Community Location: Umoona

Description of community needs:

There are only very limited wifi options in Coober Pedy and these are all of these are about a 2km walk from community. Ummona would like to install wifi hotspots on its main Admin building, as well as our key community facilities such as the sports hall and community centre, so community members not only have access to digital connectivity, but are also encouraged to interact more with our facilities and services.

Digital connectivity is essential for employment, social services as well as personal development and this is supported by a number of Umoona's other programs and partners; all of which would benefit from this service.
