Journalist Fund

The $5 million Journalist Fund program aims to support regional news businesses to hire new cadet journalists to produce locally relevant news content in regional areas. Up to $5 million has been committed to support the hiring of cadets.

Eligible grant activities include:

  • The selection and onboarding of a new cadet journalist
  • The employment of a new cadet journalist

First Nations Cadetships Round

The $0.5 million First Nations Cadetships round of the Journalist Fund closed on Friday 17 March 2023. The Department is currently consulting with four First Nations news organisations to support the engagement of five First Nations Cadets. 

Round 1 outcomes

Applications for the first cadetships round closed on 20 April 2022. 42 applications were received from news organisations. Each application was assessed by a panel of officials from the department.

The 34 successful news organisations have begun hiring up to 56 cadet journalists under the 2-year program.
