Inquiries and reviews into the ABC and SBS

Review of options to support the independence of the national broadcasters

On 20 July 2023, the Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP, announced the opening of public consultation for the review of options to support the independence of the national broadcasters (the review).

The review will examine ways to deliver a greater level of financial stability and certainty to the national broadcasters, to safeguard against funding cuts and political interference.

Terms of reference for the review were developed in consultation with the ABC and SBS, and outline issues relating to the funding and governance arrangements of the national broadcasters. They also list issues that are out of scope for the review.

Public consultation closed on 31 August 2023 at 5:00pm AEST. To view the consultation paper (including the terms of reference), and read public submissions, please visit the review's Have Your Say page.
