Proposed increase in road user charge for heavy vehicles powered by gaseous fuels from 2021-22

On 30 March 2021 Infrastructure and Transport Ministers agreed to increase heavy vehicle road user charges for 2021-22 by 2.5 per cent. This will see State and Territory registration fees and the Commonwealth heavy vehicle Road User Charge (RUC) increase by 2.5 per cent from 1 July 2021 (noting Western Australia and the Northern Territory set their registration fees separately to national decisions).

The 2020-21 RUC rate for compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is 34.4 cents per kilogram. A 2.5 per cent increase will see this increase to 35.3 cents per kilogram from 1 July 2021.

The department sought public comments on the increased RUC rate from 14 April to 14 June 2021. Consultation has now closed. Formal submissions received during consultation are published below.
