CR 123: Analysis of Medical Data From Fatal Road Crashes (1994)

Summary

This report, based upon data in the Federal Office of Road Safety Fatality File database, analyses various aspects of medical outcomes resulting from fatal road crashes in Australia in 1988. In particular the report describes the nature of injuries suffered by those killed and quantifies the degree to which certain factors contribute to crash survival or, in the case of those killed, the timing of death. There is also a brief section examining crashes in which death resulted from low severity injuries.

CR 142: Alcohol controls and Drink Driving: The Social Context (1994)

Summary

This report presents the findings of a study aimed at developing an overall picture of the drink driving elements that comprise the social contextual influence in Australia. Open ended discussions were held with key opinion leaders in the field of research and policy related to drink driving. In addition a survey which was mailed to a large sample of persons who were identified by snowball sampling as experts and/or workers in the defined areas.

CR 137: Lower Limb Injuries to Passenger Car Occupants (1994)

Summary

Lower limb injuries occur to front seat occupants in more than one in three head-on casualty crashes. A study was undertaken to determine the various types of injuries, the sources of injury inside the vehicle, and the mechanisms of injury. This information was to help guide future regulation effort aimed at reducing the frequency and severity of these injuries and to make recommendations about how these injuries might be mitigated in future vehicle design.

CR 139: Young drivers Research Program: Graduate Licensing Survey Technical Report and Data (1994)

Summary

The Graduated Licensing Survey reported here formed part of the Evaluation of Australian Graduated Licensing Schemes (Haworth, 1994, [CR136]), one of the components of the Young Driver Research Program which Monash University Accident Research Centre undertook for the Federal Government's Road Safety Research Initiative. The survey focussed on knowledge, attitudes, compliance and perceptions of enforceability, and social costs associated with the components of the graduated licensing system.

CR 146A: Vehicle speeds and the incidence of fatal pedestrian collisions. Volume 2: Case data

Summary

The aim of this study by the NHMRC Road Accident Research Unit was to estimate the likely effect on pedestrian fatalities of a reduction in vehicle travelling speed. Results were based on detailed investigations of 176 fatal pedestrian collisions in the Adelaide area between 1983 and 1991. Estimates were developed for a range of speed reduction scenarios. Volume I of this report contains detailed findings for each speed reduction scenario along with a description of the method used and supporting references. Volume II contains the details of all 176 cases.

The Development of Traffic Safety as a Profession: Tertiary Education

Summary

This report investigates the potential for the professionalisation of Traffic Safety. The multi-disciplinary nature of Traffic Safety is discussed and justification is provided for the provision of tertiary studies in Traffic Safety to unify the body of knowledge. From a review of literature, it has been found that the improvement of knowledge, through continuing learning (education, peer review, discussion, reading publications, attending conferences, etc is the dynamic in professionalisation.

CR 125: A comparison of accident and emergency with police road injury data (1994)

Summary

This report examines the consistency of police and hospital reporting of outcomes of road traffic crashes using a database linking police accident reports and hospital accident and emergency (A & E) department data.

CR 130: Young Driver Research Program: Review of Exposure Reduction Measures (1994)

Summary

There are potential road safety benefits to be obtained from reducing the opportunity for young drivers to be involved in road crashes, that is, by reducing their driving exposure. This report identifies a range of technical and strategic issues which are relevant to a comprehensive discussion of such measures.

CR 136: Young Drivers Research Program: Evaluation of Australian Graduated Licensing Scheme (1994)

Summary

A graduated licensing scheme was one of the elements of the 10-point road safety package announced by the then Prime Minister in December 1989 as part of the Federal Government's Road Safety Initiative, for adoption by States and Territories.
