Overview

• Consistent with previous waves, this latest survey of community attitudes towards road safety issues again shows that speeding, in particular, and drink driving are considered to be the principal factors that lead to crashes. Each of these factors is spontaneously mentioned by more than half of the population as a major reason for road crashes.
• While both of these factors are clearly the most important, speed still dominates as the one single factor that people mention first when thinking about crash causes.

Summary

There have been many interventions implemented around the world in an attempt to deter drink drivers. However, high risk offenders who repeatedly drink and drive are difficult to target. If high risk drivers could be identified prior to receiving convictions for drink driving, or prior to being involved in a crash, they could then be targeted for a brief road safety intervention. For example, such an opportunity would occur when a road user was in hospital receiving treatment for an alcohol-related problem.

Summary

Analyses the risk of death of sober, licensed riders involved in fatal road crashes and describes the circumstances of crashes involving these riders. The analysis is based upon the FORS Fatality File for 1988, 1990, 1992 and 1994, and the Australian Bureau of Statistics Survey of Motor vehicle use for 1991 and 1995.

This report constitutes a two-part project plan, first, for investigating the relationships between human and environmental determinants of motor vehicle crashes, and second, for investigating the characteristics of the injured patient, the injury and the post injury medical care that explain the variations in patient outcomes. It is the product of a considerable period of development and pre-testing and outlines a process now ready for implementation.

This is the twelfth in a series of annual surveys of community attitudes and perceptions towards a range of road safety issues. Results of this 1999 Community Attitudes Survey (CAS 12) were derived from telephone interviews with a national sample of 1,600 Australian residents aged 15 years and over. Outlined below is a summary of key findings from the 1999 survey, along with a description of emerging trends and patterns. Detailed results are provided in the main body of the report.

Summary

Speeding has long been recognised as a major factor in road crashes in Australia that deserves priority attention. While police enforcement quite rightly has been the major weapon against excessive speeding, there have been a number of calls for supplementary measures to reduce speed related road trauma.
