MR 09: The feasibility of conducting an 'alternative transport' day in Brisbane

Summary

The project investigated the feasibility of an event which promotes the use of transport modes other than the private car. A participative event was considered necessary to draw attention to the promotion. The study considers the characteristics of the existing transport system and the likely demands placed on it by a promotion. The proposed promotion is an intensive media campaign culminating in a one-day event.

CR 109: Factors Affecting Fatal Road Crash Trends: Summary Report (1992)

Summary

This report summarises the influence of non-road safety factors on the level of fatal road crashes. Economic, social and meteorological factors were analysed as independent processes, each capable of influencing the number of fatal crashes. Various statistical models were fitted to determine the power of each factor to predict crash trends. This report summarises the findings described in report CR 106.

The Systematic Trial of an Innovative Community-Based Drink Driving Rehabilitation Program

Summary

In 1990-91 the research team received seeding funding from F.O.R.S. and the Institute of Criminology to determine whether a newly designed Corrective Services Commission Rehabilitation Program (CSCRP) was viable as an amroach to rehabilitation and in what ways it could be evaluated.

OR 12: Review of Passenger Car Occupant Protection—Main Report

Summary

This reports on a $1 million standards development program by the Federal Office of Road Safety to review and improve occupant protection in passenger cars. It is part of a Federal Government initiative to reduce road trauma through road safety research. The aim of the review was to identify the causes of injuries to vehicle occupants and to help develop a cost effective strategy to reduce these injuries. This included analysis of actual injuries and a possible range of countermeasures.

MR 10: Effects of a Reduced Alcohol Limit for Driving (1992)

Summary

Data from police random breath testing (RBT) and alcohol tests of crash-involved drivers were used to assess the effects of a reduction in the maximum permitted blood alcohol concentration (BAC) for driving. Most debate on selection of legal drink-driving limits has focused on the assessment of driving impairment and crash risks at BACs below the current legal limit in the relevant jurisdiction.

CR 104: Fatal Crash Types—Summary Report—Analysis of 1988 Fatality File (1992)

Summary

This report summarises different types of fatal road crashes based on Australian data from 1988 in the FORS Fatality File. Fatal pedestrian, bicycle, motorcycle, involving passenger vehicles and/or rigid trucks in rural high and urban low speed zones, and crashes involving children are characterised in terms of frequency, timing, location, prevailing road and driving conditions, vehicle movements, fault, contributory factors (such as alcohol and speed), persons involved and medical details of the fatalities and injuries.

The evaluation of a program of providing a free breath test and a discounted taxi fare

Summary

In the last four months of 1991, a street level survey was carried out in Adelaide to gauge people's attitude to a service of providing a free breath test and a discounted taxi fare. Issues covered in this reportinclude attitudes to drink driving, driving behaviour, estimating blood alcohol levels, and the effect of recording a high BAC has on intended driving patterns.

MR 11: National Train the Trainers motorcycle rides trainers seminar (1992)

Summary

A national two day motorcycle rider trainers "Training for Safety" seminar was held at the BMW Performance Driving Centre, Norwell, south of Brisbane, on 17 and 18 September 1992. The seminar was arranged as one of the motorcycle training initiatives stemming from the consultative package developed when ADR 19.01 for daytime running lights for new motorcycles was announced by The Minister for Land Transport, the Hon Bob Brown MP, in December 1990.
