Summary

This report investigates strategies that would be effective and practicable in reducing driver fatigue long distance road transport industry. Information was collected from correspondence and consultations with international authorities in the area, consultations with major employer and employee organisations in Australia, and a questionnaire based survey of 960 drivers across Australia.

The Effect of Visual Impairment on Driving Performance

Summary

This study investigates how visual impairment affects driving performance and whether this can be predicted by visual testing in a clinic. Visual impairment (cataracts, visual field restriction and monocular vision) was simulated for a group of young normal subjects. Driving performance was assessed (on a closed road circuit) by measuring peripheral awareness, manoeuvring, reversing, reaction times, speed estimation, road positioning and time to complete the course.

CR 144: Strategies to Combat Fatigue in the Long Distance Road Transport Industry: Stage 2 Evaluation of Alternative Work Practices (1995)

Summary

In this study measurements of a range of indicators of fatigue were collected on long distance truck drivers undertaking a 10-12 hour journey under different operational conditions. Measurements of cognitive performance, physiological state, vehicle control and subjective perceptions of fatigue were taken for a sample of 27 drivers on trips corresponding to staged driving, single driving and driving to a flexible schedule.

CR 155: Heavy Vehicle Crashes in Urban Areas (1995)

Summary

Research into the types, severity and causes of crashes involving heavy vehiclesin urban Australia was carried out and countermeasures were recommended to reduce the incidence and severity of such crashes. The project included literature review, mass data analysis, detailed post-crash analysis of fatal crashes, analysis of accident black spots and in-depth investigation. The study found significant deficiencies in driver, rider and pedestrian behaviour which directly relate to thecausation of severe crashes.

OR 13: FORS Serious Injury Database: 1992 Tabulations

Summary

This report represents a general set of tabulations for 1992 from the Serious Injury Database compiled by the Federal Office of Road Safety (FORS). More specific review of the 1992 police serious crash data will be provided within FORS’ annual statistical series Road Crashes Resulting in Hospitalisalion, together with analysis of hospital data for that year about road crash admissions.
