Summary

In the last four months of 1991, a street level survey was carried out in Adelaide to gauge people's attitude to a service of providing a free breath test and a discounted taxi fare. Issues covered in this reportinclude attitudes to drink driving, driving behaviour, estimating blood alcohol levels, and the effect of recording a high BAC has on intended driving patterns.

MR 11: National Train the Trainers motorcycle rides trainers seminar (1992)

Summary

A national two day motorcycle rider trainers "Training for Safety" seminar was held at the BMW Performance Driving Centre, Norwell, south of Brisbane, on 17 and 18 September 1992. The seminar was arranged as one of the motorcycle training initiatives stemming from the consultative package developed when ADR 19.01 for daytime running lights for new motorcycles was announced by The Minister for Land Transport, the Hon Bob Brown MP, in December 1990.

CR 111: Older Pedestrian Demonstration Projects: Final Report (1992)

Summary

This is a summary of the reports submitted by 17 local governments describing their participation in the Older Pedestrian Demonstration Project. In that project, these local governments were funded by the Federal Government to undertake demonstrations of the types or approaches that could be taken to overcome older pedestrian safety problems. This Final Report includes a brief synopsis of each of the local government's activities for older pedestrian safety in the funding period, and a discussion of the various methods used.

Visual Function as an Objective Measure of Alcohol Intoxicaction

Summary

The aim in this project was to investigate the viability of using changes in visual system function as a measure of alcohol intoxication. The best candidate measures of changes in visual function as a result of consuming alcohol were identified from the literature. These were aspects of motor and autonomic visual system function. These abilities were measured with standard clinical tests in experiment 1. Young male students who defined themselves as social drinkers were randomly assigned to control and two alcohol groups (low and moderate BAL).

CR 114: Trends in Road Crash Fatality Rates: International Comparisons with Australia 1970–1990 (1992)

Summary

Australia has seen a substantial and sustained reduction in road crash fatality rates between 1970 and 1990. This report compares this reduction with that seen in other countries. Report CR 115 comprises a summary of this report and of CR 113, which is a detailed analysis of the trends in Australia.

CR 102: Willingness to pay for vehicle safety measures—Phase 1 Report. Methodology and survey techniques (1992)

Summary

The focus of this project is to determine the amount which Australian car buyers are willing to pay for vehicle safety features that protect occupants in the event of a crash. In the phase 1 report methodologies and survey instruments are examined and evaluated with regard to appropriateness. Suggestions for the implementation of the contingency valuation technique are included, and characteristics of a recommended sample for a survey of this type are outlined.

The Health Risks of Long-Distance Trucking

Summary

This is the final report of the first phase of a project which aims to enrich the understanding of factors underlying the health risks of long-distance trucking. The project explicitly departs from previous methodologies in (a) interviewing truck-drivers personally and at length rather than by postal questionnnaire (b) extending the analysis of health risks to the families of truck-drivers. It takes as the target of analysis the lifestyle of truck-driving as opposed to the job.

CR 110: Environmental Adaptation of the Main Street in Country Towns: Towards Guidelines (1992)

Summary

This report establishes the principles for planning, analysis and design and formulates guidelines for the environmental adaptation of the Main Street of country towns, which should lead to a safer and more attractive environment to users of the main street without compromising the integrity of through traffic movements. The report explains how to look for solutions to problems as identified, outlines the principles upon which environmental adaptation is based, and documents the various measures that could be employed.

CR 117: Motorcycle Safety Literature Review (1992)

Summary

This report presents the findings and recommendations of a worldwide review of the literature on motorcycle safety research, covering the period 1987 to 1991. The literature examined was divided into a number of categories which included the following: alcohol, licensing, rider training, motorcycle design features, road environment, public education and awareness and helmet design.
