CR 11: Alcohol and crashes: Identification of relevant factors in this association (1980)

Summary

Factors in the association between alcohol and road accidents were investigated by collecting information on breath alcohol concentrations of a sample of the general driving population and of control drivers who were matched with intoxicated accident-involved drivers. The relevance of the results of these investigations to drinking driver countermeasures is discussed and recommendations are made for further investigations and for changes in current practices.

CR 18: Inventory of exposure data (1980)

Summary

A survey was conducted with the aim of identifying the major sources of exposure data in Australia. For each source, the following items are listed: name and address of source, how frequently data become available (e.g. quarterly, annually), to what region the data pertain, particulars of any publications available, what supplementary information exists, the limitations that have to be taken into account when using the data, and a description of the data available.

CR 14: Side impacts and the effect of Australian Design Rule 29 for side door strength: a preliminary study (1980)

Summary

Australian Design Rule (ADR) 29 specifies side door strength requirements of all new cars in Australia from1977 models onwards. It is based on and almost identical with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 214. The report first reviews other studies of the effectiveness of side door strength and then a selection of the literature on side impacts to establish important factors. It then describes an analysis of 1977-78 claims to the "no-fault" injury compensation scheme operated by Motor Accidents Board (MAB) in Victoria.

CR 12: The effect of Australian Design Rule 22A for head restraints (1980)

Summary

Australian Design Rule (ADR) 22A requires head restraints to be fitted to driver and front left seats of all new cars in Australia from 1975 model onwards. It upgraded ADR 22 by requiring the head restraints be not adjustable below a specified minimum height. This study was based on 1977-78 claims to a "no-fault" injury compensation scheme operated by the Motor Accidents Board (MAB) in Victoria.

CR 17: A software package to identify and select treatments for hazardous utility poles - user manual - 2 volumes (1980)

Summary

This manual describes a suite of computer programs that identify and evaluate treatments for hazardous roadside utility poles. The program PRANK is used to identify the hazardous poles in the set of poles that is input to it. The program POLFIX is used to evaluate feasible treatments to a small group of utility poles. The cost of each treatment is compared against the expected benefits accruing from a decrease in accident frequency and/or severity. Included in this manual are detailed User Instructions and examples of the program use.

CR 19: Effects of seat belts and head restraints on neck injury (1980)

Summary

While there is strong evidence that seat belt wearing reduces the incidence of severe injuries to vehicle occupants involved in crashes, there is also evidence that the use of lap/sash seat belts increases minor and moderate neck injuries in crashes. In recent years, head restraints have been installed in the front seats of cars with the ain of reducing minor neck injuries ("whiplash"), principally in rear impacts where impacts where their frequency of occurrence is highest.

CR 24: The 1979/80 ACRUPTC survey of vehicle free speeds in capital cities of Australia (1980)

Summary

In 1979/80 a Survey of vehicle free speeds in urban areas was undertaken by State and Territory Authorities for the Advisory Committee on Road User Performance and Traffic Codes (ACRUPTC). The survey measured free speeds of cars and derivatives, trucks and other vehicles on a wide spectrum of roads in the capital cities of the six States and in the Australian Capital Territory.

CR 20: A review of rural speed limits in Australia (1980)

Summary

The National Road Traffic Code is being reviewed by the Advisory Committee on Road User Performance and Traffic Codes (ACRUFTC), and during 1978/79 an assessment of speed limit provisions in the Code was undertaken. The present study was originally performed to contribute to the ACRUPTC review, but it has been subsequently updated to include the changes, which were made in late 1979 to the Code provisions and to State and Territory practice.
