CR 69: Day to day travel in Australia, 1985–86 (1988)

Summary

This report tabulates day-to-day travel of Australians in 1985-85. The number of trips, the distance travelled and the time spent travelling are classified by mode of travel, sex of the trip maker and several other factors.

CR 71: Road safety benefits from rural road improvements (1988)

Summary

This report describes the results of a literature review undertaken to determine the cost-effectiveness of a range of safety improvements for rural roads. Safety benefit to cost ratios have been determined for eleven categories of improvements to the road and roadside, including road delineation, signage, pavement resurfacing, shoulder and lane widening, overtaking lanes, geometric improvements, roadside hazard management, construction of medians and barriers, intersection treatments, railway crossing treatments, and new road construction.

CR 78: An in-depth study of rural road crashes in South Australia (1988)

Summary

An intensive on-scene study of crashes on rural roads outside of towns was carried out from June 1986 to July 1987 in an area of roughly 100 kilometres radius around Adelaide, South Australia. A two man team comprising a social scientist and a physical scientist gathered information by detailed examination of the scene of each crash and the vehicles involved, and by interviewing the participants in, and witnesses of, the crash. The team was notified of crashes through the regional centres of St. John Ambulance Service. A total of 80 crashes were investigated.

The distribution of driver eye height at mid-block

Summary

The reduction in mid-block driver heights between 1969 and 1988 suggests that the current design value of 1.15m used by many Australian road authorities to provide safe stopping and overtaking sight lines should be lowered to allow for the change. Cleveland et al (1985) suggested that the safe stopping distances in the U.S. should accomodate the 15 percentile driver. The results of the current study suggest that if such a standard was adopted in Australia it would be necessary to reduce the design driver eye height to 1.050m.

CR 74: Community attitudes to road safety, community attitudes survey Wave III (1988)

Summary

AGB: McNair was commissioned by FORS to conduct Wave 3 of a national survey on community attitudes to road safety. This report contains results from Wave 3, and where possible comparative results since 1986. Issues covered in the survey include, attitudes to drink driving, the acceptance of RBT, causes of road crashes, safe driving skills, perceptions of police enforcement and views held regarding various road user groups.

CR 76: Survey of occupant restraint, stage 2 (1988)

Summary

This study was commissioned to provide information on seat belt wearing rates in the Northern Territory and in provincial towns in Victoria and New South Wales. Data was obtained through observation of restraint use in Alice Springs and Darwin and in six towns in each of Victoria and New South Wales. A strict sampling frame was followed that ensured as far as possible that a representative sample of road users in the surveyed towns was obtained. The results of this survey were found to be very similar to those of the Stage 1 survey.

CR 79: Review of in-depth crash research (1988)

Summary

Reports of in-depth crash studies from Australia, UK, Europe and the USA were reviewed. Successful studies were found to have defined and explicit objectives, a sound statistical design, appropriate analysis, and a substantial report which was related to the objectives of the study. On-scene studies gather transient information, and allow development of insight into the crash process; follow-up studies are more convenient, but at the cost of 1st information. The resources required for each are similar.

CR 75: An analysis of the relationship between road improvements and road safety (1988)

Summary

The report identifies aggregations of crashes by location (black spot), or by other common characteristics. Further work involved correlating crash occurrence with road parameters such as alignment, roughness etc, on a selected sample of road and examined the feasibility of automating the procedures nationwide.

CR 66: Out and About child safety campaign (1988)

Summary

The Federal Office of Road Safety developed an education package "Out and About" aimed at children aged 5-11 years. The material is a major component of a campaign for the safety of children in the traffic environment. This report summarises the major findings of three phases of evaluative research undertaken amongst primary school teachers, parents and pupils who had trialled the "Out and About" material. Overall the reactions were very positive about the usefulness of the material.
