This week I am hosting three very important events, either organised and driven by the community, or in response to community-initiated success.

On Tuesday morning I will be hosting a breakfast meeting at Government House to support the work of the Women's Advocacy Group Norfolk Island (WAGNI) who have partnered with the Wesley Mission to deliver a financial literacy program “In Charge of My Money” to Norfolk Island's women and girls.

The Advisory Committee for the Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area (KAVHA) met on island last week, with discussions focusing on making progress toward unifying the site's operations.

Last week was a very busy one for Norfolk Island with the visit from Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, John McVeigh. At the start of the week in a Radio Norfolk interview, I put out a challenge to the community to take the opportunity with the Minister visiting to leave him in a position to be a strong and passionate champion for Norfolk Island. A very big thank you to all in the community who the Minister met with and the productive manner in which you raised matters with the Minister. Minister McVeigh is a good listener.

Modern Awards

Firstly may I take this opportunity to congratulate the Norfolk Island Chamber of Commerce for the proactive and practical way in which they have supported the local business community, in the lead up to the 1st of July 2018 as employers and employees transition into the new world of Modern Awards.

The Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area (KAVHA) Advisory Committee and the Australian Government are committed to protecting KAVHA's important heritage values, as well as planning for its future as a world class tourism destination.

KAVHA is much more than a collection of buildings from the convict period—it is a multi-layered cultural landscape reflecting a unique and complex history, from early Polynesian visitation through the colonial, penal and Pitcairn settlement periods, to the present day.

Australia Day is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution that every Australian makes to our dynamic nation and I was pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 Australia Day Awards yesterday at Government House.

Norfolk Island is a resilient and resourceful community and this is certainly reflected in the high caliber of this year's award recipients.

Changes to the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW) (NI) are being made to facilitate the Norfolk Island Regional Council (Council) election in 2020.
