Planning Act changes to support Norfolk Island’s growth and sustainability

The Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities and the Council have been working together for some time to address barriers to the construction of important public infrastructure on Norfolk Island.

In response to a request from the Council, changes have been made to the Planning Act 2002 (NI) to support Norfolk Island’s growth and sustainability.

The main change is a new approval process for significant developments such as recreation centres, waste management facilities and roads.

The Australian Government has been working in consultation with the community to help strengthen child and family support services as part of its commitment to the health, safety and wellbeing of children and families on Norfolk Island.

To complement these efforts, the Australian Government has also been working to modernise laws on Norfolk Island. This will better protect children, women and other residents against criminal violence and other illegal acts.

Regional Investment Officer for Norfolk Island

Applications are now open for a Regional Investment Officer (RIO) to promote and facilitate economic development on Norfolk Island.

This is part of the Regional Development Australia (RDA) program which brings together all levels of government, business and community groups to support economic development in Australia.

Having seen firsthand the value in terms of resources and skills the national RDA network can bring, I am pleased there will be a full time person based on Island to support opportunities for the community.

Thank you to the RSL for the opportunity to speak this morning. I also had the privilege of giving this address 12 months ago, but having only recently arrived on Norfolk Island I was unprepared for the poignancy of the scene behind me.

New education laws for Norfolk Island

New education laws have just been introduced on Norfolk Island to underpin a greater range of services at the Norfolk Island Central School. The laws will lead to greater educational opportunity and further support the effective day-to-day running of the school.

While based on New South Wales legislation, the new education laws have been modified to reflect Norfolk Island's circumstances.

Community consultations on draft Norfolk Island Health Service Plan

In line with the Australian Government’s commitment to engaging with the Norfolk Island community on the delivery of health and aged care services, KPMG will be returning to the island to continue engagement on the 2019 Draft Norfolk Island Health Service Plan (the 2019 Draft Plan).

Extensive consultation was carried out across the community and was critical in the development of the Draft Plan that provides practical ideas to feed more local data and knowledge into decision-making.
