Bounty Street Bridge closure

Due to significant public safety risk, Bounty Street Bridge will need to be closed to traffic immediately. The Australian Government and Norfolk Island Regional Council agree this action is necessary while remedial works are undertaken.

On 18 January, I informed the community that technical investigations of the bridge would occur in the coming weeks and it was planned to change access arrangements to reduce the bridge to one lane only.

Consultations on strategic plan for Norfolk Island postponed

The community consultation process to inform the development of a community-led strategic plan for Norfolk Island has been postponed due to the current COVID-19 (Coronavirus) response and travel ban.

The community survey release and on-Island consultations will be rescheduled in coming months. I will keep you informed when we are ready to recommence this very important piece of work.

Initial consultations on Norfolk Island Multipurpose Health Services Facility design

The Australian Government is commencing the next phase of the Norfolk Island Multipurpose Health Services Facility (MPHS) project with stakeholder consultations to inform the initial design of the proposed MPHS.

GHD Pty Ltd, the design services contractor recently engaged by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications (the department), will initiate the design process by engaging with stakeholders in two stages.

Extension for the temporary desalination system

Due to ongoing weather conditions, the Army water purification and desalination system at Cascade Pier will remain on Norfolk Island until 13 March.

The system arrived on island on 7 February, was set up the following day at Cascade Pier, and began producing desalinated water for community members in need.

Geography and climate

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands" atolls are classic coral atolls, the typical horseshoe shape formation is affected by the prevailing winds and oceans. Coral sand beaches are to the seaward and mudflats can be found on the lagoon side.

It was great to see the strong engagement and interest from stakeholders and the broader community in the recent consultations on the 2019 Draft Norfolk Island Health Service Plan (the 2019 Draft Plan).

During their week on island, KPMG met with stakeholders from health and community service providers, community groups and representatives from the Norfolk Island Regional Council.

Kingston Pier channel project to improve access and safety

The Australian Government is commencing a project to deepen and widen the Kingston Pier channel bed, to improve safety and access, providing significant benefits to pier users and the broader community.

The upgrade will include augmentation of the channel bed at the pier, to improve access and safety in all tides, and ensure it meets required navigation standards.

Have your say on Norfolk Island Multipurpose Health Services Facility design

In response to the community feedback received as part of the consultation conducted in September, KPMG and design services contractor GHD Pty Ltd will be conducting a further round of on-Island consultation on the initial design concepts for the Norfolk Island Multipurpose Health Services Facility (MPHS) in the last week of October.

The MPHS project team will be testing updated design concepts with the community and stakeholders, based on the previous feedback received.

Update on Norfolk Island workers' compensation scheme

I would like to provide the community with an update on the move to a new service provider for Norfolk Island's workers" compensation scheme, which is now scheduled to commence by 1 January 2021.

This is a short extension to the anticipated timeframe of the second half of 2020, as a result of COVID-19 impacts, and the postponement of the Federal Budget from May to October 2020.

The new service provider, Gallagher Bassett, remains committed to providing the essential workers" compensation arrangements needed for Norfolk Island.
