Yesterday, the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC proclaimed the commencement of interim arrangements under the Norfolk Island Legislation Amendment Act.

This marks the beginning of what is now a 378 day transition period, including to move to a Norfolk Island Regional Council from July 2016.

Australia Day marks the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove in 1788. Nearly six weeks later that same year, the first colonial settlement on Norfolk Island was established.

On Australia Day, we celebrate our modern nation and its diversity across all Australian states and territories.

International Women's Day is held annually on 8 March to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women. On this day we reflect on the present success and past failure of efforts to ensure women and girls are valued in not just our society, but all societies around the world.

While we have reason to be proud of Australia's record, there continues to be much to do in many other parts of the world where women and girls are still commodities of men.

The strong sense of community was celebrated at Government House on Wednesday 16 September following another successful community Open Day.

Over the past year, sixteen organisations helped provide a positive experience by ensuring Government House could be opened to the public including for many Island visitors.

Fifteen open days were made possible by volunteer “sitters” who interacted and guided the visitors while almost 2000 people passed through this significant national historic asset over the past year.
