225th Anniversary of the Wrecking of His Majesty's Ship Sirius off Norfolk Island

Next Thursday, 19 March 2015, marks the 225th anniversary of the wrecking of the HMS Sirius at Sydney Bay Norfolk Island. As a result many additional visitors are on Norfolk Island.

The Sirius was at the heart of Australia's history as the flagship of the First Fleet. The wreck on the reef at Kingston, Norfolk Island is of significant heritage value to our nation.

Release of reports detail planning for economic growth and service delivery

From next week, I will be releasing the first of a series of reports which will inform reform policy and future delivery of services and economic development for Norfolk Island.

These reports were commissioned by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development in mid-2015 and focus on the following key areas:

The Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area (KAVHA) on Norfolk Island was one of 11 sites around the country to be included the Australian Convict Sites UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2010.

It is at the heart of early Australian history, stretching back to 1788, and it is also at the heart of the people of Norfolk Island, since 1856. Many Island residents have lived history within the buildings and open spaces of the convict heritage site.

Administrator's 2016 Young Endeavour Community Scholarship

Nominations are sought from young people aged 16 to 23 for the Administrator's Young Endeavour Community Scholarship.

This Scholarship will assist one young person ordinarily resident on Norfolk Island to participate in a sail training voyage aboard the Young Endeavour.

The Young Endeavour experience is not a leisurely cruise. It is challenging adventure training at sea, which seeks to develop confidence, teamwork and leadership skills.

Judith Davidson awarded Churchill Fellowship

Judith Davidson is one of the 109 Australian recipients of the Churchill Fellowship for 2015.

This is the 50th Anniversary of the Fellowship which has been awarded to talented and inspired Australians seeking to gain knowledge to better their local communities.

Judith will study and research how the other 10 Australian convict sites within the UNESCO World Heritage Listing utilise and promote heritage values.

As we progress the changes which commence from 1 July 2016, there is increasing focus on what is meant by strengthening and growing the Norfolk Island economy and how this can be achieved.

The recent release of reform reports highlights opportunities, areas of improvement and a range of options which can drive positive change for Norfolk Island and the future Regional Council.
