I welcome news of the Royal Australian Navy's Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) Flight deployment to Norfolk Island.

The LADS hydrographic survey unit will survey the vicinity of Norfolk, Nepean and Phillip Islands to improve nautical charting in the area for safe navigation of coastal and commercial shipping.

Following her appointment on 19 January 2015, Sergeant Catherine Tye has commenced her role as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Norfolk Island Police Force (NIPF).

Catherine is a welcome addition to the NIPF and comes to this appointment with 15 years policing experience in general duties, national investigations, training, professional standards and administration.

I am pleased to announce with effect from 1 July 2015, the wholesale price of unleaded petrol and diesel will reduce by $0.18 and $0.23 per litre respectively. The new wholesale prices will be $1.85 per litre for unleaded petrol and $1.84 per litre for diesel. This will reduce the price the community will pay for fuel.

I have also determined electricity tariffs be reduced by $0.06 per kWh, due to the reduction in diesel costs. The new tariff of $0.62 per kWh will be effective for electricity consumer after 1 July 2015.

We are pleased to welcome the appointments of the Honourable Justice Anthony Besanko as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island and the Honourable Justice John Gilmour as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island.

Today, 17 September is Australian Citizenship Day.

I was pleased to mark the occasion by hosting a citizenship ceremony at Government House.

This ceremony was attended by a number of members of the community who have also received Australian citizenship over the past 12 months.

Since Citizenship Day last year I have been honoured to host six citizenship ceremonies on Norfolk Island, conferring citizenship on 13 members of our community, adding to our modern nation of people from the four corners of the earth.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of well-known Norfolk Island resident and author, Ms Colleen McCullough AO.

Ms McCullough was born in Wellington, NSW in 1937. Her mother was a New Zealander. Her family settled in Sydney and she attended Holy Cross College. She continued her studies at the University of Sydney (in medicine).
