Last week I met with the Honourable Scott Morrison MP—Prime Minister of Australia, Peter Dutton MP—Minister for Home Affairs, and Sussan Ley MP—Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories, in Canberra, and discussed a broad range of issues including the reopening of the Immigration Detention Centre.

I am working closely with the Australian Government, and the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities, to manage the impact of increased activity on Christmas Island.

Details around the management of the Immigration Detention Centre, and border protection, are a matter for the Australian Government, relevant Ministers, and their departments.

It is my role to work with the community and to advise the Australian Government to ensure community voices are heard and that any impacts are acknowledged and managed.

I, and the Australian Government, remain committed to supporting the development of a strong, sustainable and diverse economy on Christmas Island.

I will continue to work on the implementation of initiatives in the Christmas Island Strategic Plan.

In addition, the Government is continuing its consideration of the establishment of an integrated resort with casino license, funding the Regional Investment Officer on island, and progressing the release of crown land for commercial and residential development.
