Summary

This is the fifteenth in a series of surveys of community attitudes and perceptions towards a range of road safety issues. Findings from this 2002 Community Attitudes Survey (CAS 15) were derived from telephone interviews with a national sample of 1,563 Australian residents aged 15 years and over. The survey was conducted in March and April 2002, and the effective response rate was 63%. A summary of the main findings from the 2002 survey, along with a description of emerging trends and patterns, is provided below.

Summary

This report describes the results of a national survey of transport companies in Australia. The aim was to survey companies about knowledge and awareness of fatigue, about workrest scheduling practices and about the factors which underlie the way schedules are organised. The survey was designed to provide complimentary information to that obtained in a national survey of drivers undertaken at the same time, and reported elsewhere.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is developing a heavy truck crash database for fatal and serious injury crashes in response to increased demand for truck safety data by governments, the National Road Transport Commission, relevant industry organisations and police services.

Summary

This publication is the third in a series of reports for the ATSB in which we have detailed the development of a protective headband for car occupants. In CR193, we documented the results of tests made to determine the energy absorbing characteristics of several candidate materials. CR205 reported further investigations of possible production grade materials and discussed aspects of the design that would determine the general form of the headband in a consumer version of the product.

Fatal Crashes At Level Crossings

This publication presents the findings of a study of 87 fatal crashes at level crossings that were among those that occurred in the period 19881998 and involved a train and a road vehicle (a road vehicle can be either a motor vehicle or a non-motor road vehicle, such as a bicycle). The study focussed on crash details recorded in ATSBs Fatality Crash Database, a national database holding records of crashes on public roads resulting in at least one fatality.

The optimum speed is defined as one which balances the social costs and benefits of increased travel time with decreased road trauma, vehicle operating costs, emissions, etc. The project focused on urban residential streets with 60 kmh speed limits because of the availability of a considerable amount of relevant basic data. Three different methods were considered to measure the impact of travel speed on road trauma and/or crash costs (Kloeden et al 1997, Nilsson 1984, Kallberg and Toivanen 1998).

This report examines a proposed operational definition of fatigue, and the occurrence and characteristics of fatigue-related road crashes within Australia as identified by the operational definition.

Fatal four wheel drive crashes

This monograph examines the involvement of four wheel drive (4WD) vehicles in fatal crashes. It reports on the characteristics of fatal crashes involving 4WDs and compares them with the characteristics of crashes involving other passenger vehicles.
