Speeding has been long recognised as a major factor in the occurrence and severity of road crashes. While enforcement, education/publicity and engineering programs have assisted in reducing speed-related road trauma, supplementary measures to reduce the incidence of unsafe speed behaviours, particularly at hazardous locations, have been sought.

The purpose of this publication is to examine trends in the numbers of transport accident deaths in Australia in the 1980s and 1990s in the light of the most recent comparable data from most other countries that are members of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Overall, the data indicate that in the period from 1980 to 1999 Australias transport safety improvement compared favourably with that of other OECD countries and performance reached OECD median levels in the 1990s.

This project involved the development of an anti-whiplash car seat for rear impact collisions.Concept seat models were created in MADYMO and rear impact simulations with a seated THORdummy were conducted. The process involved modifying seat geometry to determine the optimalseatback and head restraint configuration. The intention was to minimise head, neck and T1accelerations, angles and NIC values. The final design includes a new seatback design that keeps theupper seatback within close proximity to the upper torso.

In 2001, National Transport Insurance Ltd (NTI) volunteered to forward heavy truck crash data to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) for analysis. This report looks at NTI truck crash claims for 1998 to 2002. In an attempt to capture crashes predominantly involving the long-distance truck fleet, the analysis was confined to incidents where trucks were at least 500 kilometres outward distance from base.

Earlier research by the authors indicated that driving cessation appears to occur in stages, each of which has specific challenges and needs. Suggestions for a staged approach to resources to assist with the driving cessation process were made and the need for further investigation into the process and outcomes of driving cessation was identified.
