The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the International Labour Organization have developed and adopted three sets of non-mandatory guidelines to ensure the rights of seafarers are respected. These are the Guidelines on Fair Treatment of Seafarers in the Event of a Maritime Accident, the Guidelines on Shipowners" Responsibilities in respect of Contractual Claims for Personal Injury to or Death of Seafarers and the Guidelines on Provision of Financial Security in Case of Abandonment of Seafarers.

On 17 January 2017 the Government announced a $12 million investment in a two year program looking into the future of positioning technology in Australia.

The funding will be used to test instant, accurate and reliable positioning technology and its ability to provide future safety, productivity, efficiency and environmental benefits across many industries in Australia. The introduction of Approach to Landing Procedures with Vertical Guidance (APV) has been identified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as an internationally significant measure to reducing accidents involving Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) for all ICAO States.

One of the means of achieving APV is through the implementation of Barometric Vertical Navigation (Baro-VNAV) approach procedures.

The policy on the rollout of Baro-VNAV approach procedures in Australia was finalised in 2016.
