Building Better Regions Fund and Stronger Communities Programme

The Australian Government is welcoming submissions for the highly successful Stronger Communities Programme and Building Better Regions Fund, with the most recent rounds opening earlier this month.

Under the Stronger Communities Programme, Norfolk Island will have the opportunity to share in $150,000 of Australian Government funding, with grants of between $2,500 and $20,000 available to cover up to 100 per cent eligible project costs—except for governing bodies where grant funding will be up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs.

Traffic counters in Kingston

There has been some recent interest in the traffic counters which have been installed at the Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area.

These traffic counters are a routine information-gathering tool to inform improvements and the management of the World Heritage site.

They will collect accurate data on traffic movements in the area for regular analysis over the coming year.

The installation and use of the traffic counters has no relation to—or impact on—parking arrangements or site access.

Trans-Tasman travel zone a boost for Norfolk Island

I welcome the commencement of the Safe Travel Zone between Australia and New Zealand on 19 April, and the benefits this two-way travel arrangement will bring to Norfolk Island.

The Trans-Tasman Safe Travel Zone now enables quarantine-free travel between New Zealand and Australia – including Norfolk Island – reuniting friends and families, plus providing a much-needed boost to our local tourism sector.

Temporary flight arrangements for Norfolk Island

The Australian Government has engaged Qantas to deliver air services to and from Norfolk Island from 7 March 2021 to 11 March 2021, following ongoing uncertainty with quarantine-free travel arrangements between Australia and New Zealand.

Until this uncertainty is resolved, Air New Zealand is not able to deliver air services to and from Norfolk Island, as Air New Zealand crew are required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Australia before crewing air services within Australia.

Norfolk in spotlight with Tourism Australia visit

I am very pleased that Norfolk Island will be welcoming senior executives from Tourism Australia for a visit from 5-10 March 2021, as part of our ongoing work to grow our tourism offering and market.

Organised by The Unique Tourism Collection on behalf of the Office of the Administrator, the trip will support Norfolk Island's future tourism promotion and development.

The group will include senior representatives from Tourism Australia along with an external journalist and content creator.

Ensuring Norfolk Island's emergency management arrangements best support the community

Development of the Norfolk Island Fire Management Plan (NIFMP) project is progressing, with a consultant now appointed and preparing to engage with local stakeholders on the plan.

Eco Logical Australia was carefully selected for their expertise in fire planning strategies and bushfire planning and management, ensuring the best outcome for the Norfolk Island community.

Qantas to deliver Norfolk Island flights in coming months

The Australian Government has engaged Qantas to deliver passenger and freight air services for Norfolk Island for the next three months.

Air New Zealand remains the long-term underwritten supplier of air services to Norfolk Island. However, the current impacts of COVID-19 on Air New Zealand's crewing arrangements and service delivery, mean that this arrangement with Qantas is critical to ensure the continuity of air services to Norfolk Island.

Update on temporary flight arrangements for Norfolk Island

Suspension of the Tasman green zone quarantine-free travel arrangements between Australia and New Zealand continues due to COVID-19 cases in New Zealand.

The Australian Government will continue to engage Qantas to deliver air services to and from Norfolk Island until Air New Zealand is able to resume flights to Norfolk Island.

Details of the revised flight schedule for 19 and 20 February are below.

Repatriation flights for Norfolk Island

The Australian Government has been urgently working to restore air services to and from Norfolk Island, in collaboration with Air New Zealand and Qantas.

We are pleased to announce that repatriation flights will be run between Sydney and Norfolk Island and Brisbane and Norfolk Island on Sunday 31 January 2021, delivered by Qantas. Flights between Brisbane and Norfolk Island will also be available on Monday 1 February, Tuesday 2 February and Wednesday 3 February, with connecting services to Sydney and other mainland Australian cities.
