The Norfolk Island emergency shelter project is one of a range of important initiatives aimed at better preparing Norfolk Island for emergency and disaster events.

Funded by the Australian Government, the project was announced in December 2019, to support the design and site selection for an emergency shelter to protect the Norfolk Island community during extreme weather events. Outside of emergency situations, we also want this shelter to be suitable for use as a community facility.

Administered by the Norfolk Island Regional Council (NIRC), applications are now open for the relief scheme which is designed to assist local businesses hit hard by the downturn in visitors caused by widespread COVID-19 lockdowns and travel restrictions across Australia.

Following extensive stakeholder and community consultation, the Australian Government has now finalised the Kingston Pier channel construction design.

The design option selected was the option preferred by the community, with the new design allowing more than one vessel to use the channel at a time to access the Pier (subject to swell and weather conditions).
