Each year, our staff are invited to participate in the Australian Public Service (APS) Employee Census. The Census is an annual engagement survey asking staff their views on areas including job satisfaction, leadership, wellbeing, innovation and communication. The 2022 Census was open to staff from Monday 9 May to Friday 10 June 2022.
89% of our staff participated in the Census, and the results show a strong improvement from 2021. All six Index Scores have improved since 2021, with the largest improvement to our Wellbeing Policies and Support index, improving by 5 points.
Our results reflect a passionate and dedicated workforce who value their colleagues, and who believe strongly in our objectives and Values and those of the broader APS. Our results tell us that:
- Our staff are committed to delivering high-quality work, by wanting to go the extra mile (95% agree) and cooperate together to get the job done (93% agree).
- We have a culture that allows our staff to further their learning and development (76% agree, up 14 percentage points from 2021)
- We have substantially improved upon our communication and change management measures, which were a major focus from 2021.
- There are opportunities for us to continue to focus on our IT systems and services across the department.
We have continued the conversation on our results through a series of collaborative workshops. These guide our divisions in identifying and celebrating what’s working well, while acknowledging where we can improve, and developing pragmatic actions to take forward to make our workplace the best it can be.
