The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts is proud to release our 2023 Australian Public Service Employee Census results (the Census).
The Census is an annual engagement survey that asks for staff views on areas such as wellbeing, innovation, communication, leadership and culture. In 2023, the Census was open to staff between May 8 and June 9.
88% of our staff participated in the Census. This high response rate means we have a comprehensive dataset to analyse and draw insights from to inform our workforce strategies and actions.
Overall, our Census results held fairly steady compared to last year. We have seen strong improvements in areas relating to our diverse and inclusive culture, flexible working arrangements, and connection to the agency. Our Engagement index continues to rise, and the other indices remain stable and above the broader APS.
Our results reflect a workforce that upholds our departmental Values, and are hardworking, inclusive, and cooperative. However, there are areas we need to turn our attention to. We have developed a department-level Census action plan with clear linkages to our Capability Review response.
To continue the conversation at a local level, we have collaborated with divisions through workshops to form the basis of their action plans. These sessions encourage staff to celebrate what we’re doing well, identify areas for improvement, and develop tangible actions to make our department a great place to work.
