Background

Obstructions in the vicinity of an airport have the potential to create air safety hazards, and to seriously limit the scope of aviation operations into and out of the airport. The effects of individual obstacles may be relatively minor; however, a number of obstacles may seriously limit runway utilisation, cause airspace congestion and reduce the effective handling capacity of the airport.

Parking Infringement Notices Scheme (PINS)

The Department regulates landside vehicle parking and traffic enforcement (known as PINS) at participating airports. Currently, this includes Brisbane, Gold Coast, Hobart, Launceston, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, and Townsville airports.

PINS is administered under the Airports (Control of On-Airport Activities) Regulations 1997, pursuant to section 172 of the Airports Act 1996.

Introduction

The Department regulates the sale and supply of liquor at leased federal airports within New South Wales through the Airports (Control of On-Airport Activities) Regulations 1997 (the regulations). These regulations are made pursuant to section 170 of the Airports Act 1996 and currently apply to Sydney (Kingsford-Smith), Bankstown and Camden airports.

Q: What measures exist to protect the environment at leased federal airports?

A: The Airports Act 1996 (the Act) provides a system for regulating the 21 leased federal airports. This includes environmental management for 19 of the Airports. The Act also provides that for each of the 19 airports there is to be a airport environment strategy (AES) approved by the responsible Minister. In accordance with changes to the Act in 2010, the AES is now a component of the Master Plan process.
