Mobile Black Spot Program Round 8—Project Noticeboard

Take a look at our Project Noticeboard to find out if there are any potential project proposals targeting resilient mobile coverage in disaster prone areas that you may wish to develop into an application for Round 8 of the Mobile Black Spot Program.

Organisation: Goondiwindi Regional Council

State: QLD
Location: Kindon, Gore Highway. Lotplan 5MH663, Coordinates: 150.73964, -28.07935

Project description:

This is forestry area that experienced recent fires in 2022, 2023. The Gore Highway, a major thoroughfare with approximately 2246 vehicles daily, is regularly closed immediately southwest of this location due to flooding. The Kindon area serves as the primary diversion route during these closures.

Reliable mobile coverage is essential to ensure motorists receive timely alerts, warnings, and detour instructions, mitigating the risk of them becoming trapped by floodwaters. For heavy vehicles, this area often represents the last safe opportunity to turn around and avoid the closures. Improved connectivity is vital for public safety during emergencies.

Organisation: Goondiwindi Regional Council

State: QLD
Location: Newinga Reserve, Talwood Mungindi Road. Lotplan 8BLM1, Coordinates: 149.31091, -28.61682

Project description:

This region experiences regular flooding, frequently rendering the road impassable. Reliable connectivity is crucial for motorists to contact assistance when needed. Improved coverage would also enable Council to deploy automated flood warning devices, enhancing public safety.

Emergency response services report several recent incidents of delayed response due to poor connectivity, highlighting the critical need for improvement. The area supports significant intensive agriculture, generating substantial traffic flow, particularly during peak harvest season. Existing private infrastructure on adjoining properties may offer sharing opportunities.

Residents and local farmers experience extreme difficulty in taking calls, sending messages and accessing internet services. In an event of a natural disaster could result in lack of access to information and placing additional pressure on emergency services. Telecommunications is extremely vital in ensuring road users can contact emergency services in the event of an accident on the notoriously dangerous Bruce Highway. It is also known that terrain impacts signal from towers and on large agricultural properties, loss of telecommunications hinders their productivity and knowing if they are hurt in the paddock, they can call for help.

Project description:

This road is the main connection between the towns of Warwick and Stanthorpe and is prone to natural disaster as was experienced in recent bushfires. Much of this section of the highway has poor mobile coverage with parts having no mobile coverage. It is vital that there is sufficient telecommunications capacity during a disaster not only to coordinate response services but also emergency notifications and evacuations. This is also the main transport corridor to the South of Warwick, and there have been numerous traffic accidents along this highway. -28.287804, 151.953651

The Dawson electorate is susceptible to natural disasters, high road fatalities and home to one of the largest agriculture producing regions in Queensland. As a regional area, the Dawson electorate has the Bruce Highway that runs directly through it and unfortunately is known as the worst Highway in Australia for fatalities. Telecommunications is extremely vital in ensuring road users can contact emergency services in the event of an accident. Dawson is also dependent on telecommunications for accessing support services during natural disasters. They play a vital role in managing and mitigating the impacts of natural disasters in the region.
