3.2 Journey start and end

To enter the public transport system, people need to travel from their location to a public transport node such as a bus stop, train station, ferry terminal or airport.

3.7 Disruption to business as usual

Occasionally, there may be disruptions to the usual operation of the public transport system. Examples are cancellations of services, closure of a train line or busway, weather related disruptions such as severe storms or fog, vehicle breakdown, replacement of a train with a bus service, or evacuation of a vehicle or station due to an emergency.Disruptions can be planned or unplanned. A planned disruption is generally well managed with advance notice, and alternate transport arrangements can be put in place to minimise disturbance as much as possible.

International Symbol of Access

Part 34 of the Transport Standards requires the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, in consultation with the Attorney-General, to review the efficiency and effectiveness of the Transport Standards within 5 years of them taking effect, with subsequent reviews to be undertaken every 5 years.

National Accessible Transport Taskforce update—May 2020

The National Accessible Transport Taskforce (the Taskforce), jointly led by the Australian Government and Queensland, is driving the reform and modernisation of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards).

Reforms are to be based on four principles that have been endorsed by the Transport and Infrastructure Council (which sits under the Council of Australian Governments):

The National Accessible Transport Taskforce (the Taskforce) is considering a range of policy options to modernise the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards) for people with a disability. The Taskforce met regularly across June 2020 to focus on the initial areas for reform to the Transport Standards.

National Accessible Transport Taskforce update—February 2021

On 12 February 2021, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications released the Reform of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport: Consultation Regulation Impact Statement (Consultation RIS). This Consultation RIS is available on the Department's website.

The National Accessible Transport Taskforce and the National Accessible Transport Steering Committee met throughout the second half of 2020 to continue to consider a range of policy options to modernise the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards) for people with disability.
