How many of the environmental criteria do I need to satisfy?

You only have to satisfy one of the 4 criteria. Vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 1996 are eligible under Criterion 1. Criteria 2, 3 and 4 are options for vehicles of all ages.

This section is not directly relevant to claimants for the fuel tax credit. It is for organisations seeking registration of a test facility for the purposes of the fuel tax credit.

Under the Fuel Tax Act 2006, which applies from 1 July 2006, businesses wishing to seek a fuel tax credit for the use of diesel fuel in a heavy road vehicle must satisfy one of four environmental criteria to be eligible for the credit. The energy grant credits scheme and its associated urban and regional boundary criteria no longer applies from 1 July 2006.

Further to the National In-Service Emissions (NISE) study a second smaller study was undertaken into emissions from vehicles running on liquified petroleum gas (LPG). For logistical reasons LPG vehicles were not tested in the original NISE study.

A number of important findings came from the study but the principal message remained: for LPG fuelled vehicles substantial emission reductions can be achieved by basic good maintenance practices. The study also demonstrated the benefits of using modern LPG fuel systems technology.

“Motor Vehicle Pollution in Australia”

In May 1996 the Federal Office of Road Safety released the report of a two year study examining the scale and distribution of pollution from cars on Australian roads and the potential for reducing emissions from this source.

The report “Motor Vehicle Pollution in Australia” contains the analyses of the Study results and represents the most comprehensive set of data ever collected on the Australian car fleet.
