Topic: Vocus Group Limited Undersea Cable – Initial Earthworks at Flying Fish Cove

You may be aware that Vocus Group Limited is currently laying an undersea internet cable, the Australia-Singapore Cable, between Perth, Australia and Singapore, via Indonesia. The project includes a cable extension branching from the main cable to Christmas Island.

To support the cable branch to Christmas Island, Vocus Group Limited has begun preparation works on Christmas Island.

The Department has received late notice of earthworks, commencing on Monday 8 January 2018, to bring the undersea cable ashore at Flying Fish Cove. During these works, it is necessary to fence a small section of the Flying Fish Cove Foreshore for public safety, as shown in the map below.

Works should not affect general activities in the cove.

Work will cease during the return of the Christmas Island red crabs and on 26 January 2018 to minimise impact on the environment and the community.

Once complete, Vocus Group Limited expects the 4,600 kilometre submarine cable system to deliver greater internet connectivity, bandwidth and reliability to all consumers.

The project is expected to be complete by July 2018. More information about the Australia-Singapore Cable is available at australiasingaporecable.com.
