CR 21: The economic and social costs of road accidents in Australia - with preliminary cost estimates for Australia in 1978 (1981)

This report contains a review of recent accident cost estimation studies and proposes a unit cost framework which is considered appropriate from both conceptual and empirical view points for the estimation of the social costs of road accidents in Australia.

CR 19: Effects of seat belts and head restraints on neck injury (1980)

While there is strong evidence that seat belt wearing reduces the incidence of severe injuries to vehicle occupants involved in crashes, there is also evidence that the use of lap/sash seat belts increases minor and moderate neck injuries in crashes.

This manual describes a suite of computer programs that identify and evaluate treatments for hazardous roadside utility poles. The program PRANK is used to identify the hazardous poles in the set of poles that is input to it.

The objectives of driver training programs using filmed material are examined, and evidence about the effectiveness of the method is discussed. Desirable features of a sequence of films are identified.

CR 25: Safety requirements of bus seats and seat anchorages (1981)

Literature on bus safety was surveyed with emphasis on seat design, seat standards and injury mechanisms together with a study of accident statistics. Existing standards were investigated and the local manufacturing industry surveyed.

In this introductory study into one specific aspect of the bull-bar problem, a statistical sampling was conducted to evaluate the number of passenger cars fitted with bull-bars in metropolitan Melbourne.

CR 11: Alcohol and crashes: Identification of relevant factors in this association (1980)

Factors in the association between alcohol and road accidents were investigated by collecting information on breath alcohol concentrations of a sample of the general driving population and of control drivers who were matched with intoxicated accident-involved drivers.

OR 6: Compulsory Seat Belt Wearing in Australia: Characteristics of Wearers and Non-wearers

At least 90 per cent of passenger car occupants aged 8 years and over have a seat belt available in their seat position. Unfortunately many occupants do not wear the belts provided.
