Community matters—04 January

As the Australian Government continues to invest in Norfolk Island, the Australian Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development provides updates to the community on those investments.

Transfer Vessels

There are two types of transfer vessels being discussed for Norfolk Island—cargo transfer vessels and passenger transfer vessels. The passenger transfer vessels are currently in final design phase with delivery expected in May 2019.

Over the next 12 months, the Department intends to undertake further research and commence consultations with the local community on the most appropriate, reliable and safe method for the delivery of sea cargo to Norfolk Island. This important work, which is part of a broader long-term port management strategy for Norfolk Island, will include further examination of the potential for introduction of sea cargo containerisation. While this necessary research and work is underway the design of a cargo transfer vessel has temporarily been placed on hold.
