Celebrating diversity and difference on Australia Day

Australia Day is an opportunity for us all to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures which Australia comprises of and acknowledges the difference and equality we all share as a nation.

I am pleased to announce the recipients of the 2016 Australia Day Awards, recognising service and contribution to the community by inspiring groups and members of the Norfolk Island community.

  1. Citizen of the Year—Mr Tim Sheridan
    This award recognises an outstanding contribution to the local community through over 19 years leadership of the Australian Defence Force Cadets on Norfolk Island.
  2. Young Citizen of the Year—Ms Shae Wilson
    This award recognizes outstanding contribution to the local community by a person under the age of 25 years. Shae has shown dedication across a number of fields—performing and teaching Tahitian dancing, representing Norfolk Island at the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games and being selected to represent Norfolk Island at the 2016 World Championship Junior Championships for netball.
  3. Achievement Award—Mr Donald & Mrs Maree Reynolds
    This Achievement Award recognises the significant achievement of other categories, including contribution to public service. Don and Maree have for many years been dedicated to diverse cultural pursuits including: teaching ukulele, guitar and Tahitian dancing as well as creating opportunities and encouragement for people to play and perform for the enjoyment of many in the community.
  4. Sportsperson of the Year—Mr Phil Jones
    This Sport Awards recognises outstanding ability or participation, or achievement in a particular competition. Phil has represented Norfolk Island at the South Pacific Mini Games in Port Moresby as well as the Merdeeka Asia Pacific Indoor Championships in Malaysia, the Asia Pacific Championships in Christchurch New Zealand.
  5. Junior Sportsperson of the Year—Mr Will Partridge
    This Sport Award recognises outstanding ability or participation, or achievement in a particular competition. Will has displayed outstanding ability in tennis; winning this year's Cheryl Tennis Club Championships. As well as outstanding ability in Rugby League; Will has been offered a two-year contract with the Queensland based Redcliffe Dolphins Rugby League Under 20s Colt team.

I wish to acknowledge all who were nominated and the successful recipients of the Australia Day Awards, which were presented at Government House at a ceremony attended by many in the community.
