Joint Statement from the Administrator and Chief Minister

We are pleased to welcome the appointments of the Honourable Justice Anthony Besanko as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island and the Honourable Justice John Gilmour as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island.
The Honourable Justice Anthony Besanko has been a member of the Federal Court of Australia since 2006. He has been an Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of Australia Capital Territory since 2007 and was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island in 2013. Prior to that, he was a Judge in the Supreme Court of South Australia since 2001. He undertook appellate work and was appointed as a Queen's Counsel in 1994. He was President of the South Australian Bar Association from 2000 to 2001.
The Honourable Justice John Gilmour has been a member of the Federal Court of Australia since 2006. He was born in Scotland and studied at the University of Dundee. He settled in Australia in 1976 and was admitted to the Western Australian Bar in that year (Queen's Counsel since 1994).
We are indeed fortunate to have such highly qualified and distinguished Judges appointed to these important positions and look forward to welcoming them to Norfolk Island.
