Following Wednesday’s significant rockfall event at the Kampong, specialist expert risk assessments have been carried out. The Christmas Island (CI) Emergency Management Executive met today to consider the advice from the experts and it was agreed to lift access restrictions to the Kampong from 4pm today.
- Residents of block 409 may return to their homes after 4pm.
- Metro’s (Billy’s shop) have advised that they will reopen at 4pm.
- Flying Fish Cove, Tai Jin House and the boat ramp will reopen to the public from 4pm today.
The jetty will remain closed until advised by the Harbour Master.
As a precaution, temporary fencing will be installed around areas within the Kampong to minimise access to those areas. The recreation areas including the sports field will be fenced and remain closed whilst the risk assessments continue to be carried out. Please do not enter fenced areas.
This event has been a timely reminder that rockfall or landslide events can occur at any time. People are not to approach or access any areas near construction zones or the existing rockfall protective barriers at any time.
It is critical that residents and visitors in the Kampong residential area understand the risk of land slippage and rockfall and evacuate the area immediately if alarms sound or if asked to do so.
