New Electricity Fees for the Indian Ocean Territories

Number: A51/2020

Date: 19 October 2020

Following an annual review, changes to the electricity fees for the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) have been made to ensure they align to those in Western Australia (WA).

The Australian Government is responsible for the delivery of electricity services to the IOT, and is providing essential support to electricity customers on Christmas Island (CI) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI) as part of the ongoing response to COVID-19 (Coronavirus). This includes the ongoing subsidising of electricity services to CI and CKI.

These latest updates to the electricity fees guarantee that IOT communities are paying the same as, or similar to, electricity users in WA, in line with the Australian Government's commitment that communities in the external territories have comparable services and essential infrastructure to mainland Australia.

Extracts of the amended fees are attached for your information.

There are no increases made to residential (A2) or government (N2) supply or usage charges. Some of the fees (supply charges and usage charges) have increases ranging from 1.80% for charitable residential premises (D2) to 3.70% for businesses (L2).

Copies of the full fee Determinations and associated Explanatory Statements for each Territory are available at the Federal Register of Legislation's website at www.legislation.gov.au/ by searching for the respective Determination using the F code:

The revised rates listed in these Determinations take effect from 1 November 2020.
