The Commonwealth, through the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities (DIRDC) is responsible for good governance in the Territory of Christmas Island and the Territory of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
In delivering state-type services, WA legislation applies as Commonwealth laws in the Territories, known as applied laws.
Recently the WA Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) provided an opportunity for interested stakeholders, Australia wide, to comment on its review of the Local Government Act 1995 (WA) (the Act). Submissions closed on 31 March 2019. DLGSC’s vision is for the local government sector to be agile, smart and inclusive.
DIRDC’s submission is available at https://regional.gov.au/territories/publications/index.aspx
DIRDC will continue to monitor the review of the Act and its implications in the Territories.
Further information on the review is available at https://www.dlgsc.wa.gov.au/localgovernment/strengthening/Pages/LG-Act-Review.aspx
