The Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities (the Department) assures residents that it has not reduced its support for mail delivery services to Christmas Island. Most mail will continue to arrive on the weekly Friday passenger flights, supplemented by the regular Tuesday air service.
Residents may experience some delay to mail services over the busy Christmas and New Year period when flights returning from the mainland are heavily booked, as it is in the best interests of the community to prioritise passengers and their luggage on the available flights. If delays do occur during this peak period, the Australian Government will utilise the capacity available on the regular fortnightly Friday freight service, to ensure that mail is delivered to the island as quickly as possible.
The Department acknowledges the support provided by Serco, which provided additional mail delivery capacity to the island in recent years, at no additional cost to the community.
