I am delighted to congratulate Mr Brian Lacy AO on receiving the Officer of the Order of Australia in the General Division in the 2019 Australia Day Honours.

Mr Lacy received this award “for distinguished service to the public administration of Australia’s Indian Ocean Territories, to industrial relations, and to the law”.

Mr Lacy served as Administrator of the Indian Ocean Territories from 2009 to 2012, and was a strong advocate for the communities of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

During his time as Administrator, Mr Lacy focussed on developing an environmentally sustainable economy, supporting the Shires and local community groups, and promoting social cohesion. Mr Lacy also chaired the Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Emergency Management Committee, Economic Development Committee, the Health Consultative Committee and the Inter-Agency Coordination Committee.

I thank Mr Lacy for his wonderful contribution to Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and congratulate him once again on his well-deserved award.
