The Australian Government, through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development's Territories Division, provides funding to the Water Corporation of Western Australia to provide water and wastewater services to the Indian Ocean Territories of Christmas Island (CI) and Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI).
The Australian Government aims for full cost recovery across its range of operations however it is acknowledged that for some locations this may not be achievable. The fees recouped from the Indian Ocean Territories are less than the cost of providing water and wastewater services.
From 1 July 2019 there will be a modest increase in the fees for water, sewerage and some Building Application Services for 2019–20. Water supply and sewerage services fees will increase 2.5% and building application services fees will increase 2%. These changes reflect similar increases for customers in comparable remote locations in Western Australia.
