As announced by the Hon Sussan Ley MP, Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories, the Australian Government is completing a Strategic Assessment of Christmas Island under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
I will be conducting public consultations with representatives of the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities. An open drop-in session will be held in the Administrator’s office, Jalan Pantai, to discuss the Strategic Assessment from 4.00pm to 6.00pm on Wednesday, 13 March 2019.
All members of the community are invited to join us and find out more about what the Strategic Assessment means for the community and Christmas Island.
If you are unable to come during this time but would still like to speak to me or the Department, please telephone my office or email the Department at indianoceanterritories@infrastructure.gov.au to arrange an alternative time.
The full consultation period for the draft Terms of Reference for the Strategic Assessment is from 15 February to 29 March 2019. You can make a formal submission either through the Department’s website at www.regional.gov.au/territories/Christmas/strategic-assessment/ or in hard copy at the Administration Building. Further information on the Strategic Assessment is also available on the Department’s website.
I look forward to hearing your views about the Strategic Assessment and the opportunity it presents to protect Christmas Island’s unique environment and support economic development.
