I am writing to assure you that I am working closely with my colleagues in Canberra in relation to the Prime Minister’s announcement that immigration detention facilities here on Christmas Island will be reopened.
The Prime Minister has said that reopening the Christmas Island facilities is to deal with both the prospect of arrivals as well as transfers.
I am committed to working with the community to understand the potential implications for Christmas Island and to provide advice to the Australian Government.
Next week I will be in Canberra for meetings and will provide further updates.
