Topic: Rock Scaling Works on Murray Road

The Indian Ocean Territories Administration in conjunction with the Shire of Christmas Island, are pleased to advise the rock scaling work on Murray Road is successfully completed. The geotechnical advisor, with a team of workers, inspected the slope closely and removed loose rocks and dirt. This will reduce the risk of rock/soil falls onto Murray Road.

Ten truck loads of material was removed over the three days which equates to approx. 50 cubic metres of rock and soil.

Due to the works and the presence of dry soil, there is a likelihood of soil and rocks being washed onto the road during periods of rain, particularly during the first few heavy rainfall events of the coming wet season.

Road users are urged to slow down around the area, especially as you come down the road and around the corner.

The following actions will be taken during rain events and in the case of emerging risks;

  • Rockfall warning signs will be set up with speed restrictions to 40 kph
  • Shire and AFP will monitor the area for rockfalls or mud flows
  • Road closure may occur during heavy rain events or periods of heightened risk

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank the community for their patience and cooperation during this essential community safety initiative.
