The Australian Government has recently undertaken a project to preplace the 18 silent sentries located at various points around the island. The existing lifebuoys and rope had perished since being first installed and the battery life of the silent sentries had expired.

Upgraded silent sentries are fitted with new lifebuoys, rope and a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) which is attached to the lifebuoy.

The upgraded silent sentries are fitted with new lifebuoys, rope and a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) which is attached to the lifebuoy.

The PLB needs to be activated prior to throwing the lifebuoy in the water. There are instructions attached to the silent sentry on how to operate the PLB and on page two of this bulletin.

The PLBs attached to the silent sentry lifebuoys are identical to the personally issued units available for loan (refer to Community Bulletin 013/208) from the Australian Federal Police station on Gaze road.
