Have your say on a potential casino on Christmas Island

As Administrator of Christmas Island I have a strong interest in ensuring the views of our community are considered in decisions made by the Australian Government regarding Christmas Island. I am pleased to announce that the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities and I will be meeting with the community and stakeholders on Christmas Island next week to discuss the possibility of a casino.

The Department has released a discussion paper on the Potential for the establishment of a casino on Christmas Island to provide the community with context for discussion as part of consultations. The discussion paper is attached and a paper copy will be placed in your letterbox. An independent report investigating regulatory and compliance options for a casino on Christmas Island has also been released for information.

Consultations will be organised with community organisations and stakeholders. A Town Hall meeting will take place on Thursday 8 November 2018 at 6:30pm at Poon Saan Hall and all members of the community are invited to attend. Written submissions and feedback will also be accepted, using the form attached. Please email your submission to: indianoceanterritories@infrastructure.gov.au. Alternatively there will be a secure box at the Town Hall meeting to place written submissions and a secure box at the front of the Administration building that can be accessed 24/7. All written submissions are required to be received by 14 November 2018.

The Department has advised outcomes of this consultation will be documented and a report provided back to the community later this year. Feedback from the community will inform the development of a possible proposal for consideration by the Australian Government. The Department and I look forward to hearing your views, issues and concerns on the possibility of a casino on Christmas Island.
