Topic: Public Safety

The potentially lethal lrukandji jellyfish has been spotted in Flying Fish Cove.

Under the recommendations of the CSIRO, the Territory Controller and I have agreed to close the following beaches until 3pm Saturday for ongoing monitoring.

  • Flying Fish Cove
  • Isabell

Once the initial 24 hours has elapsed, another inspection will occur. If the jellyfish are found then the closure will be extended for another 24 hours. This will continue until no lrukandji jellyfish are found.

Signage will be deployed to inform about the closure of the abovementioned beaches.

A daily assessment of the jellyfish threat will occur. I will provide an update to the community once further information is available including when the threat has passed.

Further information about the threat and treatment of the impacts of the jellyfish will be available from the Christmas Island Hospital, Police Station and the Cl Visitor Information Centre.

Please ensure family, friends and neighbours are aware of this bulletin. I strongly urge you to stay out of the water for the period of the closure. Do NOT pick up any jellyfish—be vigilant and stay safe.
