The potentially lethal lrukandji jellyfish has been spotted in large numbers in waterways on Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
Under the recommendations of the CSIRO, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Emergency Management Committee has decided to close the following beaches for 24 hours subject to ongoing monitoring.
- Trannies Beach
- the Spot (Surf location)
- the Yacht Club
- Scout Park
- Sandy Point
- Turtle Beach
- Cossies Beach
Once the initial 24 hours has elapsed, another inspection will occur. If the jellyfish are found then the closure will be extended for another 24 hours. This will continue until no lrukandji jellyfish are found.
As a precaution all incoming passengers from Tuesday's Virgin Flight will be given a pamphlet detailing the beach closures and potential threat of the jellyfish. Additionally, signage will be deployed to inform about the closure of the abovementioned beaches.
A daily assessment of the jellyfish threat will occur. I will provide an update to the community once further information is available including when the threat has passed.
Further information about the threat and treatment of the impacts of the jellyfish will be available from the Cocos Health Clinics and the Police Station.
Please ensure family, friends and neighbours are aware of this bulletin.
