Multicultural Australia—Cohesive Communities Award
The Multicultural Australia—Cohesive Communities Award recognises local governments that have implemented innovative services, practices and/or policies that support the economic and social participation of migrants and strengthen the social cohesion of the local community.
Australians do not take our harmony and prosperity for granted. All levels of government continue to build stronger, more cohesive and prosperous communities, guided by our shared values. The contributions of local government to building integrated and cohesive communities may include:
- fostering a sense of belonging, identity and shared values
- promoting civic rights and responsibilities
- encouraging participation in the local community by culturally and linguistically diverse Australians
- developing innovative approaches to connecting the local community and building community harmony
- celebrating the cultural, linguistic and religious diversity of the community
- driving sustainable change to attitudes and behaviours that may negatively impact on social cohesion
- fostering an inclusive and respectful community.
Nominations should address the National Awards for Local Government Submission Guidelines and include information on:
- The project's relevance to the local community and how it addresses the community's specific needs, composition and diversity
- How the local government engaged local communities in the design, development and implementation of the project
- The positive impacts the project is having to facilitate integration and build social cohesion in the local community.
